Fashioning Their Future
About The Program
The fashion industry involves the collaborative efforts of professionals from many different disciplines. Fashioning Their Future, a summer camp program of The Stitch Institute, started in 2009, incorporates applied learning in the areas of science, technology, engineering, art and math (S.T.E.A.M.). The program is targeted specifically to middle or junior high school youth to keep them engaged in those disciplines. Additionally it aims to:
- Further their positive personal development
- Help them understand the environmental and social impact of the fashion industry
- Help them understand smart consumerism
Participants will be taught the fundamentals of garment construction and use sewing equipment in the creation of several projects over the course of the program. They will also be engaged in projects using the computer as they develop design concepts using pattern-making software, as well as other graphic art software and office applications.
S.T.E.A.M.
Science
Students learn where textiles come from and the link between agriculture and fashion. We explore, among other topics, the field of SERICULTURE - the science of raising worms for silk production.
Technology
They learn how technology is used throughout the industry from textile and apparel production to the creation of PRINT ON DEMAND FABRICS. They will design their own fabric to use in one of their projects.
Engineering
They learn about the history of and the engineering behind the SEWING MACHINE. They learned how to identify the parts and how to operate one.
Art
They will use fabric paint to put their own artwork on garments and learn how to use CROQUIS (fashion figures) in doing their own fashion illustrations.
Math
They learn how to use tools such as the SEWING GAUGE and the MEASURING TAPE in sewing.
